What to Expect When We Fell a Tree

Tree felling is hazardous work, and it is done properly or not at all. These are the steps our trained crew follows on every job, big or small.

    Assessment
Before anything is cut, we assess the tree’s condition, size, lean and the surroundings to choose the safest felling approach for your property.
    Clearing the area
The area around the tree is cleared of obstacles, structures and people so nothing and no one is in the drop zone.
    Notching
A wedge-shaped notch is cut into the side of the tree facing the direction we want it to fall, formed by two cuts meeting at a 70 to 80 degree angle.
    The backcut and hinge
A horizontal backcut is made on the opposite side, slightly above the notch. The strip of uncut wood left between them is the hinge, and it steers the tree’s fall.
    Felling the tree
As the backcut progresses the tree leans and falls in the direction the notch set, carefully controlled from start to finish.
    Limbing and bucking
Once down, the tree is trimmed of branches and cut into manageable sections, ready for removal or recycling.
